No 7 – Introducing Wearables to Employees

“The perception and adoption of new ways of working by your workforce is fundamental to change management and organizational success—but frontline teams are often skeptical and hesitant to new changes,” Join LifeBooster’s Program Manager & Ergonomist, William Thomas, as we discuss why it’s so important to get buy-in from your team when introducing wearables.

You may be familiar with new, industrial wearable technologies which provide a process for scaling your ergonomic data collection and analysis processes to enhance your overall risk management system. The next step in the evolution of wearable tech innovation is the integrated smart garment, or ISG.

Traditional approaches to ergonomics have struggled with scaling data collection and analysis in a simple and reliable way. The goal of scaling data collection is to have an accurate process for assessing, comparing, and prioritizing risk factors across employees, jobs, and tasks. Innovation from emerging technologies, such as wearable sensors, helps bridge that gap as a solution for scaling data collection across employees and operating locations. This enables a more inclusive and systemic perspective of risk across an organization. The next step in wearables innovation is the development of integrated smart garments, or ISGs. These ISGs provide the same data collection capabilities as wearable sensors but with the benefit of a more natural, comfortable user experience.

Integrated smart garments utilize textile-embedded sensors to collect kinematic and environmental data in real-time as employees carry out their job tasks. In market research, employees have shown a clear preference for garments over any other wearable attachment method due to ease of use and comfort. Integrated smart garments help overcome many of the logistical challenges of deploying wearable sensors and enable the data collection and risk assessment experience to become as quick, easy, and comfortable as putting on a shirt. This is a powerful benefit that will enable organizations to scale data collection and analysis with less of the challenges that they currently face, all while delivering a solution that the frontline teams can buy into.
